Chimney Pond received 12" of snow on Wednesday with a trace of rain at the end.
Rangers have broken out the winter trail through Pogy Gap to Russell Pond and are continuing to work on setting this trail prior to beginning hauling supplies to Russell.
The lower elevations of the Park added 7-8" of snow.  Chimney has received 75" of snow so far this winter and the snow stick shows 48" of snow on the ground.  With the cold to warm scenario playing out once again with the last storm, we remain concerned about increasing avalanche hazard in gullies.  Thigh-deep snow lays at the base of most Katahdin approaches out of Chimney Pond before firming up at higher and windier elevations.  Active climbing and hiking groups at Chimney have broken out almost all routes to Baxter Peak, Pamola and across the Knife Edge.A storm last Friday brought 7-8" of new snow and a trace of ice to Chimney Pond and the higher elevations of the Park.
